Is ChatGPT Quietly Recommending Your SaaS Competitors?
In March 2026, G2 surveyed 1,076 B2B software buyers and found that 51% now start their research with an AI chatbot instead of Google, up from 29% just a year earlier, according to G2's Answer Economy report.
That shift changes who gets considered before a human ever opens your pricing page. The same G2 research found that 69% of buyers ended up choosing a different vendor than the one they'd originally planned to buy, because a chatbot pointed them somewhere else, and a third bought from a company they'd never heard of before the conversation started.
The shortlist you're not on
For a SaaS company still building out its marketing function, this is the new top of funnel, and most teams don't have anyone watching it. Being left off a Google ranking used to cost you a click. Being left out of a chatbot's answer now costs you the shortlist entirely, since the buyer never sees your name to click on in the first place.
"How do you get your SaaS mentioned in AI tools like Claude and Perplexity?"
This is close to how the question actually gets asked on Quora, and the honest answer has nothing to do with buying an AI SEO tool. Answer engine optimization is the work of structuring content so a chatbot can extract, trust and cite it as a direct answer, a one or two sentence definition, a comparison table, an FAQ block, rather than three paragraphs of scene-setting before the point. Product and comparison pages written the way a salesperson explains the product on a first call, in the buyer's own language, get pulled into answers far more often than pages written purely to rank for a keyword.
Why schema markup alone won't save you
It's tempting to treat this like a technical checklist: add JSON-LD, tick the box, done. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added schema markup between August 2025 and March 2026 and matched them against 4,000 control pages that didn't. Citations across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT barely moved either way. Schema makes a page easier to parse once an AI system has already decided it's worth reading. It doesn't make that decision for you.
Freshness beats a schema checkbox
What actually moves citations is how current the page is. Ahrefs' analysis of 17 million AI citations across seven platforms found the average age of a page cited by an AI assistant is 1,064 days, against 1,432 days for a page ranking organically on Google, a 25.7% gap. ChatGPT's preference is stronger still, citing pages 458 days newer on average than the ones Google ranks organically. A pricing or comparison page that hasn't been touched since a 2024 rebrand is invisible for reasons that have nothing to do with how well it's written.
You might be blocking the crawler before any of this matters
None of the above helps if the page a chatbot would cite never gets crawled in the first place. One analysis of robots.txt files across prominent websites found that of 122 sites checked in June 2026, roughly 45% blocked at least one major AI crawler outright, and GPTBot alone is now blocked by a quarter of the top 1,000 sites, up from 5% in early 2023. Some of that is deliberate. A lot of it is inherited from a security template nobody has revisited since before ChatGPT existed. We check this as a matter of course on the Funnel, Website & CRM work we do for SaaS clients, since a page that renders perfectly in a browser can still be an empty shell to a crawler that never executes JavaScript, which is exactly the gap that keeps a well-written page out of an answer it should have won.
The next 7 days
Pull up your own robots.txt and check whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot are blocked, deliberately or by accident. View source on your three highest-intent pages, pricing, comparison and your best case study, and confirm the content sits in the raw HTML rather than only appearing after JavaScript runs. List the five questions your own sales team gets asked most often on a first call, and check whether any page on your site answers each one in a single extractable paragraph. Note the last time your pricing and comparison pages were meaningfully updated, not just a typo fix, since both studies above suggest that date matters more than most SaaS teams assume.
Getting cited by an AI chatbot isn't a separate discipline from getting found on Google. It's the same discipline, structured content answering real questions and kept current, aimed at a channel that barely existed two years ago and now decides which vendors even make the shortlist. If you're building this out for the first time, our Lead Generation Blueprint walks through the same structured approach to getting found, in more depth.
